The manual disconnection is better for that, and it still does wonders while traversing the gnarly off-road events. After conquering the motocross course we tried a more demanding off-road adventure involving rock-beds, deep ruts, and water fording. The new Land Cruiser includes a series of standard off-road equipment, such as locking rear and center differentials and low-speed cruise control (dubbed “crawl control”) to help maintain momentum when scaling rocks and ruts. The new 250 Series is a core Land Cruiser model with the same GA-F platform as the 300 Series to dramatically improve basic performance as an off-roader. It also comes with various powertrains to achieve even more powerful driving performance and environmental performance worthy of the Land Cruiser name. It was created in pursuit of unique Land Cruiser characteristics, incorporating interior and exterior styling that fuses traditional and modern in a functional package.

Toyota Land Cruiser First Drive Review

The long sweepers of my short drive revealed road holding to be commendable given the body-on-frame structure, off-road-oriented suspension and high-profile all-season tires of the 1958 I drove. Body roll isn’t excessive, steering is precise with appropriate weighting (if there’s some added in Sport mode, I didn’t really notice), and the well-sorted damping didn’t have the body bounding about in mid-corner bumps. The new Land Cruiser has adopted the latest Toyota Safety Sense active safety package with additional advanced functions. Two functions have been added to the pre-collision system that helps avoid a collision or reduce damage by detecting pedestrians (daytime and nighttime) and cyclists (daytime).

Plenty Of Cargo Space

Just like all new Toyota models these days, the company’s Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system comes standard, which gives you the full assortment of driver assist controls. Every model has a 31-degree approach, a 25-degree breakover and 22-degree departure angle. You’ve got basics like locking rear and center differentials as standard for all grades, which helps split the power 50/50 between the front and rear wheels for better traction on even the toughest terrains. Toyota also installs a standard full-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case, locking center and rear differentials, and Crawl Control, an off-road cruise control system. In terms of space, I’m 6-foot-3, and had no problem getting comfortable up front with either the 1958’s manual seats or the other trims’ power ones.

What are the Land Cruiser fuel economy and performance specs?

The J300 series Land Cruiser was unveiled on 9 June 2021.[81] Its development was led by Toyota chief engineer Takami Yokoo.[85] Built on the body-on-frame GA-F platform, the frame itself was redesigned to reduce weight and increase rigidity. The total weight of the vehicle was reduced by 200 kg (441 lb) compared to its predecessor. Other improvements claimed include lowered center of gravity, weight distribution, and an improved suspension structure. Since 1990, the smaller variation of the Land Cruiser has been marketed as the Land Cruiser Prado. Described as a 'light-duty' version of the Land Cruiser by Toyota, it features a different design compared to the full-size model and, up until 2023, it remains the only comfort-oriented Land Cruiser available with a short-wheelbase 3-door version. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will start at $57,345, including the $1,095 destination charge.

Ride quality and seat comfort match more on-road-oriented crossovers like the Honda Passport or Kia Sorento. But the Land Cruiser’s starting price of $57,345 reflects a lot of off-road engineering most families won’t need, and with upper trim costs approaching $70,000 parents might get better value from a traditional crossover. For genuine off-road enthusiasts, they’ll fine the new Land Cruiser as capable as ever, and with six decades of heritage few SUVs can match. See, the original 1958 Land Cruiser was a serious off-road bruiser that put capability ahead of comfort or passenger capacity. But the last version was a pricey, premium three-row luxury conveyance that, remarkably, remained one of the most capable off-road vehicles you could buy. Still, at a starting price of $81,000 it wasn’t a particularly accessible model for serious off-roaders, with most of them serving soccer practice and premium mall duty as owners trembled at the thought of dusty paint and dirty tires.

Improved basic performance as an off-roader through adoption of the GA-F platform

For example, the wheel to body offset imparts a feeling of strength and stability, giving the driver confidence in the capability of the vehicle... The 100 series remained in production until late 2007, with several minor facelifts such as headlights, taillights, front grille, rear spoiler and specification changes introduced over the years. Production AK10 vehicles were powered by the 2,259 cc (2.3 L), 4-cylinder Type C engine from the Toyota Model AE sedan coupled to a three-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer gearbox. Jeep, the AK10 had limited use and photographs of it in the battlefield are rare. Speaking of which, that battery prevents the Land Cruiser from offering the third-row seat you’ll find in most Lexus GXs. They take up the same space in the cargo area, which means the Land Cruiser also has the same hand-width of height tacked onto the floor, reducing overall space.

The aim was to create a next-generation Land Cruiser with improved ease of handling and comfort for both on- and off-road driving, while also delivering class-leading advanced safety performance. The new Land Cruiser is (thankfully) all about dirt and dust, and that’s what we subjected it to during our “non-paved” road test. It’s also EPA-rated at 23 miles-per-gallon (more than any previous Land Cruiser). The Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four and a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

With the durability of parts and easy repairs in the event of breakages, the design also takes customizability into account to allow users to enjoy their Land Cruiser in their own unique ways. The 100 series formed the basis for the Lexus LX 470, which was also sold in Japan as the Toyota Cygnus. The Sixth and Seventh generations of the Land Cruiser are still being produced and sold in African and Latin American regions. Toyota strives to build vehicles to match customer interest and thus they typically are built with popular options and option packages. Not all options/packages are available separately and some may not be available in all regions of the country. Toyota City, Japan, August 2, 2023―Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has unveiled the new Land Cruiser "250" Series to the world, with the launch planned for the first half of 2024 in Japan.

Every Land Cruiser gets the same “i-Force Max” hybrid powertrain combination of 2.4-liter turbo inline-four, eight-speed automatic and electric motor that produces 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. My quick, grade-heavy jaunt did it no favors, but this performance-oriented hybrid seems abundantly up to the task of moving a little over 5,000 pounds of Land Cruiser. That’s about 800 less than the old version, which had a 5.7-liter V8 with a few more horses, a lot less torque and 2,100 more pounds of towing capacity. The new one gets 23 mpg combined, which also blows away the turbo V6 in the Lexus GX (effectively the Land Cruiser’s fancy twin) that gets 17 mpg combined. The GX isn’t that much more powerful than the Land Cruiser, so I’d say that even though the four-cylinder produces quite a bit of uncouth buzz, the LC’s fuel economy advantage would still outweigh the GX’s performance one. Off road, the Land Cruiser has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, along with approach, breakover and departure angles of 31 degrees, 25 degrees and 22 degrees, respectively (the 1958’s approach is 30 degrees).

With these objectives in mind, Toyota adopted the new GA-F platform based on TNGA while keeping the frame structure, which is the foundation that protects the Land Cruiser's essence. The 250 Series inherits the Land Cruiser mission of supporting the lives and livelihoods of people everywhere, while pursuing the reliability, durability, and off-road performance that is the DNA of the Land Cruiser. In line with Toyota's carbon neutrality initiatives that take a diverse multi-pathway approach, it also comes with various powertrains, including the first hybrid system for a Land Cruiser. These achieve powerful driving performance and environmental performance worthy of a Land Cruiser.

Those also get a 12.3-inch touchscreen, though it effectively runs the same interface. The upper trims also get padded door and dash surfaces (and armrests) covered in SofTex simulated leather, resulting in a cabin that looks and feels the part of something costing more than $60,000. The design is also less severe and, well, Tacoma-like than the new 4Runner’s, providing an altogether stronger answer for “Why Land Cruiser instead of 4Runner? The redesigned new Land Cruiser (300 Series), the successor to the 200 Series that debuted in 2007, is a station wagon model. As the flagship model of the Land Cruiser series, it has in every generation led the way in vehicle evolution while incorporating the latest technologies. Due in part to its performance record, it began to be adopted as a police patrol car all over Japan.

Total system output is a respectable 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque sent through a full-time four-wheel drive system. That puts the new model at a 55-horsepower deficit to the previous one, but thanks to the power of turbocharging and electric motors, the new Land Cruiser is up 64 pound-feet of torque. Towing maxes out at 6,000 pounds, a number that will come as a disappointment for many, since the previous Land Cruiser was rated for 8,100 pounds. Specifically, it’s a Toyota built on the increasingly ubiquitous truck platform that also underpins the Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, new 4Runner, Lexus GX and, yes, the "real" Land Cruiser sold overseas that we sort of get as the Lexus LX. The new Land Cruiser is most similar to the GX, though, which you can tell just by looking at them.

The good news is that there’s still a ton of cargo space further benefiting from a big, boxy shape. Toyota hasn’t released an official volume figure, but expect it to be around 40 cubic feet. In terms of technology, the 1958 has an 8-inch touchscreen, while the “Land Cruiser” and First Edition have a 12.3-inch screen. Both run the same user interface, albeit with more features in the upper trims, which is getting a key update for Apple CarPlay that keeps the system’s menu icons permanently docked on-screen.
